  11.                              INTRODUCTION
  12.  
  13. This program will allow you to select which desk accessories and 
  14. whichprograms contained within the auto folder should be loaded when 
  15. the ST is initialised. It will work with floppy disks and 
  16. auto-booting harddisks.
  17.  
  18. This program is released as shareware, if you have any trouble with 
  19. this program just leave a message for me at the  address  given at 
  20. the  end  of  this file.

  22. If you use this program you do so at your own risk!  I will not be 
  23. held responsible  for any damage to disks,  or the information 
  24. contained  on disks or the computers and T.Vs (monitors) 
  25.  
  26.                        HOW TO INSTALL ST_INIT.PRG
  27.  
  28. To use, place the program in the AUTO folder of your boot disk or 
  29. HardDrive if it has auto-boot capability. Make sure the program is 
  30. the first one to be run. To do this, move all programs on to another 
  31. disk or ramdisk and copy them back into the AUTO folder in the order 
  32. that you want them to be run in. Note that ST_INIT.PRG will display 
  33. ALL files in the order that they are stored on the disk.

  36.                            USING ST_INIT.PRG
  37.  
  38. When used with floppy disks, the program also reads the boot sector 
  39. and checks whether it is executable or not. It does NOT re-write the 
  40. boot sector - that is left for you to do with a proper virus killer 
  41. program. The program can also read a new disk. This means that it is 
  42. not necessary to turn the ST off if you have booted with the wrong 
  43. disk. Just insert the disk and press 'N' until you have found the 
  44. correct disk to boot from.
  45.  
  46. Only single key presses are required. The only time it is necessary 
  47. to press return is when entering the date and the time. No 
  48. punctuation is allowed when entering the date or the time, just enter 
  49. the numbers

  51.          ie 2nd January 1989 is entered as 020189[return].

  55.                                COMMANDS 
  56.  
  57. Use the cursor keys to move the cursor about the screen and the 
  58. spacebar or the return key to select or de-select programs and 
  59. accessories.
  60.  
  61. A   -   Toggle Auto-Boot program (TOS 1.4 onwards) A  file  must 
  62.         have  already been installed as  auro-booting  via  the 
  63.         desktop for this to work
  64.  
  65. F   -   Change screen frequency (Colour Only) NOTE some TV's can 
  66.         handle 60hz, if yours can't, just press 'F' again to reset to 
  67.         50hz
  68.  
  69. N   -   Re-read the disk (Floppy disk only)
  70.  
  71. R   -   Change screen resolution (Colour Only or TT030)
  72.  
  73. S   -   as above
  74.  
  75. T   -   Set the date and the time
  76.  
  77. V   -   Turn off/on the verify flag for floppy disks.

  79. Esc -   Exit. The program will rename the files selected or 
  80.         de-selected by you. If there is a DESKTOP.INF file in the 
  81.         root directory, the program will alter the resolution flag to 
  82.         match the selected screen resolution and re-write the 
  83.         DESKTOP.INF file back to the disk.

  87.                               LIMITATIONS
  88.  
  89. The program can only control 114 desk accessories, and 38 programs in 
  90. the AUTO folder.  I  don't  even use half this many so  i'm  not 
  91. really interested in having the ability to handle more.  You will 
  92. only be  able to get about 20 on a floppy disk anyway.
  93.  
  94. If there is an error with the disk when trying to rename the files, 
  95. the program will simply ignore it and continue on to the next file 
  96. afterdisplaying an error message, rather than hanging around waiting 
  97. for the disk to sort itself out. This means the file may not be 
  98. renamed when exiting the program.
  99.  
  100. This program should run without any problems on any ST as it only 
  101. uses legal calls to the Operating System.

  107. Version 1 was called 'ACCLOAD', and was only capable of handling up 
  108. to 160 desk accessories, and was tested on floppy disks and hard 
  109. drives for over a year.
  110.  
  111. Version 2 had the following additions:
  112.  
  113. 1)  Flashing cursor
  114. 2)  Free Ram Indicator
  115. 3)  Ability to change screen frequency
  116. 4)  Date and time continuously displayed on the main screen
  117. 5)  Ability to control which files in the auto folder are to be 
  118.     loaded and run.
  119. 6)  A much nicer presentation screen
  120.  
  121. Version 2 was modified to handle the bug in TOS version 1.6 with 
  122. regards to the DESKTOP.INF file, so that the STE 1.6 ROMs can be set 
  123. to medium res by the desktop. - Completed 23/2/90.
  124.  
  125. Subsequent version 2.x were mainly bug fixes,  and the title screen 
  126. was created using the A-Line routines instead of using graphic blocks 
  127. which reduced the file size by 70%
  128.  
  129. Version 3.0 (February 1991)
  130.  
  131. This version was introduced to handle some of the newer features of 
  132. the new TT030 machine.  This machine has two lots of memory banks 
  133. called  ST and  TT  memory - this program will detect which type of 
  134. machine  it  is running on and display the free memory for both types 
  135. of RAM.
  136.  
  137. Also,  the TT introduces 2 new screen resolutions and still retains 
  138. the ability to display ALL of the current ST resolutions,  and this 
  139. program will  allow  you to select any of the  valid  resolutions, 
  140. while  still allowing either colour or Hi res only on the ST.
  141.  
  142. Other additions :
  143.  
  144. A  new command [A] is available to allow you to toggle whether the 
  145. file installed  in  the DESKTOP.INF file will be  Auto-booted  or 
  146. not.  This feature is only available in TOS version 1.4 and higher.
  147.  
  148. The cursor can now be controlled with the mouse, the left button acts 
  149. as though the [SPACE] bar has been pressed and the right mouse button 
  150. acts as though the [ESC] key has been pressed.

  152. NOTE - IF YOU TRY RUNNING THIS PROGRAM FROM THE DESKTOP,  WHEN YOU 
  153. EXIT YOUR MOUSE WILL BE SENT TO NEVER-NEVER LAND!
  154.  
  155. The  screen resolution now defaults to the flag set in  the 
  156. DESKTOP.INF file.  However,  version 3.0 was not too intelligent in 
  157. detecting this - one problem was this - if the machine was booted in 
  158. colour,  and a  disk with  the DESKTOP.INF file was configured for hi 
  159. res (ie especially  TOS 1.6),  the program would not let you change 
  160. resolutions - this was  VERY anoying on certain STE machines with a 
  161. certain bug. Say no more.
  162.  
  163. Version  3.1 (hopefully) fixes this problem,  and also adds yet 
  164. another new feature - if there is no key or mouse movement for a 
  165. period of  just over  2  minutes the program will exit and process 
  166. any  changes  already selected (if there are any).

  171. following machines (mainly with Hard Drives) :

  173.                         1040 STF (TOS 1.2) 
  174.                         1040 STE (TOS 1.6) 
  175.                         MEGA ST4 (TOS 1.2 and TOS 1.4) 
  176.                         TT030 (TOS 3.01)
  177.  
  178. Remember  - there could be a few glitches with certain floppy disk 
  179. set-ups,  however I didn't find any on mine when I tried it,  but if 
  180. you  do find any bugs or quirks please let me know and I will try to 
  181. fix them

  183. Version 3.* Written in 100% assembler using DevpacTT from HiSoft.
